Alicja Kamaj – Wearable Art & Emotional Fashion Objects

Here comes an invitation to acknowledge vulnerability — and to submit one’s body to it. In my practice, I explore the intimacy and emotional weight woven into the garments we wear. I let their story guide me and accept the outcomes — not without discomfort, but with trust.

                SURRENDER: to give up powerfully

Two months of production. Day by day, hour by hour, of the lonely ritual of weaving one module into another. This is SURRENDER: to give up powerfully.

The entire piece is made from waste and outlet leather donated by Polish tannery Zadora and Swedish Elmo. There is no sewing in this artwork. Everything is built up module by module.

The shape of the module allowed me to create an openwork structure, while being optimal for minimising waste after cutting out from different types of leather formats. I have made my own knife and have cut pieces with a press.

It was fascinating to be led by the chaos of waste: chaos of colours, patterns and textures.

I had the pleasure of realising this project as one of the eight finalists in the 2025 edition of the Fashion Frontier Program. Japanese program and competition founded by Yuima Nakazato, recognising designers creating artistic fashion with no compromise on social responsibility.

The project is implemented with the support of the ReSide program held by Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, and culture.pl.
